1823. William Webb Ellis picks the ball with his hands in a football
game at the Rugby College in England. The foundation of
rugby-football as a game had been laid
1830. The First Constitution of Uruguay is sworn.
1839. Albert Pell, former pupil of the Rugby School, introduces that
game at the University of Cambridge.
1842. The Victoria Cricket Club is founded in Uruguay, having been
the direct predecessor of the Montevideo Cricket Club
1843. The first rugby-football club in England is founded and
officially registered. It´s the Guy´s Hospital.
1845. Rugby rules. Goal posts take the shape of an H and points are
scored when the ball is driven through its upper part.
1850. Death of don José Gervasio Artigas, uruguayan national hero.
1851. With the bladder of a hog William Gilbert creates a
rugby-football ball with an oval shape.
1854. The first Irish club is founded. It´s the Dublin University
Football Club.
1857. A second club in England is founded. It´s the Liverpool later
on becoming Liverpool – St. Helens.
- Banco Comercial is founded in Uruguay.
1858. The first three scotish clubs are founded in this order:
Edimburgh Academicals, Merchiston Castle and St. Andrews University.
The first and second named play the first of matches between
schools.
The third club in England is founded. It´s Blackhealth Preparatory
School Old Boys.
1861. The Montevideo Cricket Club is founded in Uruguay. The
premises took the name of the district La Blanqueada and was
generally defined as "The English Ground". As most of the English
clubs in those days it was founded for the practice of Cricket but
shortly after their members started practicing football and
rugby-football and started playing matches against sailors of
British merchant and war navies.
- The Richmond F.C. and Sale are founded in England.
- Pedro Figari, outstanding uruguayan public servant and artist is
born.
1862. Blackheath is founded in England and establishes its own game
rules, including the prohibition of strangling opponents in scrums.
- The Montevideo Cricket Club imports sporting gear from England.
1863. The Football Association is founded in England and establishes
own rules for the game. English clubs establish and standarize the
rules for the game of rugby.
- The first club in Australia is founded: The Sidney University RFC.
- Field limits are set for the game of football.
- Bank of London opens a branch in Uruguay.
1864. The Buenos Aires Cricket Club is founded on 8th. December.
1868. The first international cricket match is played in Uruguay
between the Montevideo Cricket Club and the Buenos Aires Cricket
Club. It is the oldest international match registered in South
America and was played in the grounds of the former.
1869. The first international cricket match in Argentine is played
between those same clubs, on the ground of the Buenos Aires Cricket
Club, a very tight relationship that endured throughout a large
number of years, by no other sporting activity or entity.
- The Oxford University RFC is founded in England.
- Mahatma Gandhi is born.
1870. The first club is founded in New Zealand: Nelson RFC.
- The first club is founded in Wales: Neath.
- The practice of athletic sports starts in Uruguay at the
Montevideo Cricket Club.
1871. The first international rugby match between England and
Scotland is played with twenty players per team.
- The Rugby Football Union is founded in England.
- Jose Enrique Rodo, famous uruguayan writer and author is born.
