1872. William Web Ellis dies in France.
- The first club is founded in France: Le Havre.
- The Cambridge University Rugby Union Club is founded in England.
- The first rugby match is played between Oxford and Cambridge
Universities which, until now, still fills up Twickenham on every
second tuesday in December.
- Pupils of English schools in Uruguay start their first practices
of football and rugby with members of the Montevideo Cricket Club
and sailors of merchant and war ships of the United Kingdom arriving
regulary in Montevideo.
1873. The Scottish Rugby Union is founded.
1874. Rugby rules: captains are the only referees. The winner is
first determined by conversions and later also by tries.
- Club de Tiro Suizo is founded in Uruguay on 19th. April followed
by the Montevideo Rowing Club on 8th. May.
1875. The first club in South Africa is founded: Hamilton Football
Club.
- The first international rugby match is played in Uruguay between
Buenos Aires Cricket Club and Montevideo Cricket Club on the grounds
of the latter.
- Uruguayan poet Julio Herrera y Reissig is born.
1876. Rugby rules: The number of team players is reduced from twenty
to fifteen. Tries are recognized as a way to adding points.
1878. The first organized football match is played in Uruguay
between Montevideo Cricket Club and the crew of a English ship.
- The first rugby match with artificial light is played in England.
- The first Athletics Games in Uruguay are played on the grounds of
the Montevideo Cricket Club.
- Football rules: Referees are allowed to use a whistle.
- Uruguayan tale writer and novelist Horacio Quiroga is born.
1879. The Irish Rugby Football Union is founded.
- Albert Einstein is born.
1880. The Welsh Rugby Union is founded
- First written press article published in Uruguay on a sporting
event that covered a rugby match played at La Blanqueada, the
“English ground” of the Montevideo Cricket Club.
1881. The first interclubs football match is played in Uruguay on
the ground of Montevideo Cricket Club, between the teams of this
Club and of the Montevideo Rowing Club.
- Pablo Picasso is born.
1882. American Football steps in and is played with modified rugby
rules.
- Football rules: A wooden transom on the goal posts becomes
obligatory as well as side outballs to be served with the hands.
- Charles Darwin dies.
1883. The local butcher in the scottish town of Melrose, by the name
of Ned Haig, sets the rules for the seven-a-side game of rugby.
- Rugby rules: The use of whistles by referees is proposed.
1886. The International Football Rugby Board (IRFB) is established
for the monitoring and control of Rugby arround the world.
- Rugby rules: A referee and two touch linesmen are the only ones to
govern all rugby matches without any assistance by the teams
captains.
1888. The New Zealand Maories complete the longest rugby tour ever.
They played one hundred and seven matches in an eighteen months
tour.
- The Lawn Tennis Association is founded in England and the
Montevideo Cricket Club introduces lawn tennis and velocipedism
(cycling today) in Uruguay and are practiced in it grounds.
1889. The South African Rugby Board is founded.
- The Montevideo Cricket Club has to move from its original premises
because the Military Hospital is to be built on the site. It moves a
few blocks away on the same district and is also known as “La
Blanqueada” and as the “New Ground”. The new site was purchased with
a private shares issue placed amongst its members.
- The first international football match between teams of Buenos
Aires (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay) is played on the grounds
of the Montevideo Cricket Club. The former was represented by
playing members of the Montevideo Cricket Club and the Montevideo
Rowing Club. Henry Stanley Bowles, an outstanding sportman of the
Montevideo Cricket Club scores the first “uruguayan” goal in an
international match.
- Charles Chaplin is born.
1890. Football rules: The penalty area is established and is the
only area where penalty kicks can be shot.
- Vincent Van Gogh is born.
1891. Rugby rules: The in goal area is introduced after a player
from Bristol scores a try after running three hundred meters.
- The Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (C.U.R.C.C.) is founded
in Uruguay and the Football Association Club – founded one year
earlier changes its name to Albion Football Club.
1892. The New Zealand Rugby Football Union is founded.
- The final game of the first French rugby championship is played
and is refereed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who later on was
responsible for the reintroduction of the Olympic games.
1893. Northern England clubs decide to segregate from the R.F.U and
found the Northern Union, predecessor of the Rugby League.
1894. Rugby rules: Tries now count for three points. They were
valued at two points since 1891.
- Members of the Montevideo Cricket Club and other English residents
in Uruguay introduce the Golf game in Uruguay.
1895. Uruguayan poetess Juana de Ibarbourou is born.
1896. As a result of the donation of a house to the Arthur Gould
center, the Welsh Union is accused of professionalism and all
international games against them are banned.
1898. Carlos E. Cat (“Charlie”) prominent sportman and member of the
Montevideo Cricket Club is born. “Charlie” was President of the
Club, precursor and promotor of the game of Rugby in Uruguay and
became the first President of the Uruguayan Rugby Union.
1899. The River Plate Rugby Championship is established, being the
predecessor of the Argentinian Rugby Union.
1900. Rugby becames an olympic sport in Paris.
